A professional home inspection is comprised of a number of essential pieces including the exterior areas of a structure. An exterior inspection engages a home inspector in taking inventory of the siding; decks, balconies or attached patios and terraces; the general landscape and grading that offer insight into drainage problems; and the condition of all doors and windows including the trim around each. He or she will also report on driveways, garages and any other required outdoor components.

Auxiliary items, such as pools, ponds, hot tubs and outbuildings (besides garage) and recreational structures, are generally not part of a general home inspection, but in some instances can be added as part of a specialty home inspection.
